Lord, direct my wishful eyes;<br \/>\n<span style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And let me look, at least, to thee.<\/span><br \/>\nAlas! my sinking spirits droop;<br \/>\nI scarce perceive a glimpse of hope.<\/p>\n<p>Extend thy mercy, gracious God;<br \/>\n<span style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Thy quick&#8217;ning Spirit vouchsafe to send;<\/span><br \/>\nApply thy reconciling blood,<br \/>\n<span style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And kindly call thy foe thy friend:<\/span><br \/>\nOr, if rich cordials thou deny,<br \/>\nLet Patience Comfort&#8217;s place supply.<\/p>\n<p>Let Hope survive, though dampt by doubt;<br \/>\n<span style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do thou defend my shatter&#8217;d shield;<\/span><br \/>\nOh! let me never quite give out;<br \/>\n<span style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Help me to keep the bloody field.<\/span><br \/>\nLord, look upon th&#8217;unequal strife;<br \/>\nDelay not, lest I lose my life.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The first verse of Desertion appears in the recently published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shenandoahharmony.com\/\">Shenandoah Harmony<\/a> shape-note hymnal set to the tune of Braintree.
